July 2023 Newsletter

Dear Colleagues,

We are delighted to be back with our newsletter after taking a brief hiatus last month to focus on the 2023 DRK-12 PI Meeting. It was a pleasure to see both familiar and new faces at the event. We thank the NSF program officers who welcomed us and responded to questions, and to Ivory Toldson who gave a compelling talk, Post-Reform Education, the Data Revolution, and DRK–12. Furthermore, we would like to express our appreciation to the session facilitators and participants who engaged in thought-provoking discussions on current research and the challenges and opportunities for enhancing STEM education. We invite you to review the agenda and access the presentation slides and posters for an overview of the event. Leading up to the meeting, CADRE hosted a webinar organized by The Concord Consortium on Opportunities for Research Within the Data Science Education Community. The webinar was part of ongoing DRK-12 conversations (e.g., building on the roundtable discussion held at the 2021 PI meeting) and aligned with projects' focus on data science education.

During the meeting, NSF presented what’s new in the 2023 DRK-12 solicitation. We invite you to watch a video in which DRK-12 Program Co-lead Joan Walker outlines these changes. Additionally, we encourage you to watch the recordings of the Q&A webinars led by NSF program officers to learn more about DRK-12 proposal requirements and submission and award processes. If you haven't registered yet, there's still time to sign up for the upcoming office hours with NSF program officers scheduled for August. For those new to DRK-12 research, the session materials from the PI meeting offer valuable project insights and guidance.

Notably, several sessions at the DRK-12 PI meeting centered on the intersection of AI and STEM education, a topic of increasing relevance with a growing body of work within DRK-12. We would like to draw your attention to the recently released 2023 update to the National AI R&D Strategic Plan by the U.S. government.

In other news, the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy has declared 2023 as the Year of Open Science! As part of the ongoing efforts to promote open access, NSF hosted a webinar that provided information on public access implementation and data management. Looking ahead to 2024, NSF will publish Public Access Plan 2.0, aiming to facilitate immediate access to publications and underlying data. These new policies will be enforced no later than January 2025.

We look forward to sharing more updates, opportunities, and insights with you in the coming months. As always, please do not hesitate to reach out to us if you have any questions or suggestions.

Best,
The CADRE Team
