Dear Colleagues,
We have several opportunities to add to your summer calendar. First, we invite you to bring your questions about submitting a proposal in response to the DRK-12 solicitation to the upcoming office hours with NSF program officers on July 30 and August 7. Register now. Second, we hope you’ll catch up on your DRK-12 colleague’s research by reading their recent publications. See our summer reading list. Finally, summer is a great time for some professional development. Sign up for EQR’s new community of practice on propensity score analysis and estimation starting this August.
This month, our Spotlight features expertise, tools, and examples from DRK-12 projects related to assessing aspects of teaching practice in STEM education. And if you missed it the first time, we invite you to watch the related Learning Series on Instructional Observation.
The 2023 DRK-12 solicitation introduced a new project type for partnership development. The first funding in that project type has been awarded. Read their abstracts: Cultivating Math Resilience: Fostering a Durable School-University Partnership Working to Promote Math Confidence in Post-Pandemic Education; Milwaukee Mathematics Dual Enrollment Equity Pathways; and Partnership Development for Career-Long Teacher Learning in Elementary Mathematics and Science. Watch our August newsletter for news of more new awards.
Best,
The CADRE Team
DRK-12 Solicitation (23-596): NSF Office Hours | Webinars
Learn more about the DRK-12 program and Solicitation 23-596 and the proposal development process in office-hours-style webinars with NSF program officers. Please review the recordings from prior informational webinars on the solicitation before attending. This will help you prepare and make the most of the office-hour session(s). The majority of the sessions will be spent answering participants’ questions.
The sessions will not be recorded.

Assessing Teaching Practice | Spotlight
In this Spotlight, we feature expertise, tools, and examples from DRK-12 projects related to assessing aspects of teaching practice in STEM education. In addition to CADRE resources, four projects share information about the new resources, processes, or tools they are developing to assess teaching practice; approaches and strategies that have shown promise in their work; advice for other grantees; and available findings and products.
In this Spotlight:
- Resources to Support the Assessment of Teaching Practice
- CADRE Learning Series on Instructional Observation | 2023 Webinar Recording
- CADRE Compendium of Research Instruments for STEM Education, Part 1: Teacher Practices, PCK, and Content Knowledge | 2013 Report
- Measuring Teacher Change Poster Hall | 2023 DRK-2 PI Meeting
- Featured Projects
- Design and Development of a K-12 STEM Observation Protocol (PIs: Dare, Ring-Whalen, Roehrig)
- Doing the Math with Paraeducators: Enhancing and Expanding and Sustaining a Professional Development Model in PreK to Grade 3 Math Classrooms (PI: Storeygard)

Summer Reading List | 2023-24 DRK-12 Publications
CADRE has compiled a list of recent (2023 and 2024) publications affiliated with DRK-12 projects. Filter by grade level, content area, and/or topical focus area to find articles pertinent to your interests.
We also invite you to explore an impressive list of STEM education publications authored by early career researchers in the CADRE community (CAREER awardees, CADRE Fellows, and CADRE Postdocs). Find them in the Early Career News section of our website.
Visit the DRK-12 Research and Products page to explore CADRE's full collection of project resources. Email cadre@edc.org if you have project resources to add.
Propensity Score Analysis and Estimation | EQR Hub Community of Practice
The EQR Hub is offering a free virtual community of practice to build current and aspiring DRK-12 grantees' understanding of when and how to use propensity score analysis (PSA). Experts in PSA will share approaches and resources to reduce selection bias when evaluating educational interventions. Participants will learn how to use PSA to create comparable comparison groups in order to understand the impact of an intervention. Participants will also practice applying what they have learned using a synthetic data set or their own data set between sessions.
The community of practice will be held on August 13, 20, 27, and September 10 from 3 to 4pm ET. Space is limited. Fill out the interest form by August 2 to be considered.
Project Tip: Graduate Mentoring PlansNSF has long required mentoring plans to be included in NSF proposals for projects in which postdocs are engaged as contributors. Effective May 20, 2024, those who are applying for NSF funding are also required to have mentoring plans for graduate students. You will find resources for mentoring and mentoring plans on the CADRE website. Consider adding CADRE's early career resources to your plan. Resources include career development tip sheets—on career pathways, writing for publication, networking, and developing NSF proposals—developed from mentor guidance provided during the CADRE Fellows program. |
