October 2025 Newsletter

Dear Colleagues,

Although NSF is closed during the U.S. government shutdown, proposals continue to be accepted in accordance with published guidelines. Find additional information on NSF operations during the shutdown specific to panelists, proposers, and current awardees and in NSF’s Plan for Operations During a Lapse in Appropriations.

This month we are featuring a Spotlight on Data Literacy and Data Science Education. This Spotlight highlights DRK–12 efforts that build teacher capacity and engage students with authentic data—from civics inquiries and arts-based interpretation to biology modeling, climate “Data Puzzles,” and smart-greenhouse sensing—showcasing integration across and beyond STEM. Read a blog post by Josephine Louie on building K–12 data literacy.

Join us on November 18 at 12:30pm ET for a 90-minute lightning roundtable webinar with ECR and DRK–12 projects focused on early mathematics teaching and learning. DRK–12 project The Impact of an Inclusive Grades K–2 Early Algebra Intervention Implemented by Classroom Teachers will join the webinar to discuss their work. Register here.

Best,
The CADRE Team

Data Literacy and Data Science Education | Spotlight

A plant growing on a log

In this month's Spotlight, nine projects share how they are innovating teaching and learning with and about data in STEM education. They offer insights into the kinds of data students and teachers are engaging with, tools they are using to visualize and analyze data, instruments being used to measure knowledge and skills related to data literacy and data science, and more. In a blog post, Josephine Louie discusses the importance of preparing K–12 students to make sense of and reason about data, even as AI tools are increasingly capable of processing and synthesizing vast amounts of data, and highlights recent efforts to provide roadmaps for the development of data knowledge and skills.

Project Tip: Timely CADRE Resources

If you are managing an NSF project, you may be interested in resources from CADRE’s Project Management Toolkit, such as the video podcast episode “Managing Your NSF Project.”

If you’re submitting a proposal for the new NSF STEM K–12 program, find tips and advice in the CADRE video podcast episode “If I Knew Then What I Know Now” or the CADRE resource Recruiting and Retaining Participants for Your Education Research, which were developed with DRK–12 awardees’ insights and experiences. These proposal resources and more can be found in the NSF Proposal Toolkit.

We encourage you to browse through the many resources developed by CADRE to address the needs of and advance knowledge for the STEM education research community.
