June 2022 Newsletter

Dear Colleagues,

Happy summer, and welcome to the most recent new awardees! For those preparing to submit proposals for the next DRK-12 deadline (October 5, 2022), we invite you to listen to our recent informational webinar on the DRK-12 solicitation, in which DRK-12 Program Lead Mike Steele offers guidance on proposal writing and submission. If you’re designing your project, now is the perfect time to start planning for dissemination. You may want to join EQR Hub's community of practice on Designing a Communication and Engagement Plan. See this month’s Project Tip (below) for other dissemination ideas.

We’re hoping that the pandemic will stop upending our lives and our education systems soon. Still, we’ve learned a lot during these past years. This month our Spotlight focuses on research about teaching and learning during the COVID-19 pandemic.

June is LGBTQ+ Pride Month. NSF recently piloted the collection of sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) data in the National Survey of College Graduates, long advocated by those wanting more NSF surveys to build on the SOGI data that other federal agencies collect. International Women in Engineering Day was also this month, on June 23, and we invite you to read about a DRK-12 project collaboration focused on increasing female representation in physics and engineering. These June events are opportunities to celebrate successes in making STEM education more equitable and inclusive, as well as to recognize the distances that we still need to go. Here is an overview of FY22 and 23 STEM education budget and appropriations priorities at the federal level, which continue to try to address inequities and improve opportunities for a more inclusive STEM education and workforce ecosystem.

Best,
The CADRE Team

Teaching & Learning During the COVID-19 Pandemic | Spotlight

Parent helping student with mask. The past two years of the COVID-19 pandemic have disrupted numerous aspects of our lives, including education, placing new demands and constraints on families, teacher, and students.

In this Spotlight, five projects funded through NSF’s Rapid Response Research (RAPID) funding mechanism share their research and development efforts to understand the impacts of the pandemic on STEM teaching and learning, as well as support educators in teaching about and during COVID-19. In addition, Vanessa Peters discusses early results of a synthesis of research on STEM education during the COVID-19 pandemic as her team prepares for a workshop where researchers will discuss major themes, approaches to addressing emerging inequities, and implications for teaching, learning, and research.

Project Tip: Telling the Story of Your Research

Ira Flatow recently interviewed NSF Director, Sethuraman Panchanathan on Science Friday. In talking about making an impact with your research, Dr. Panchanathan said, “Sometimes things can be nailed down in numbers. Sometimes it is storytelling. Sometimes it’s anecdotes.” If you need to polish your storytelling, here are a few tips:
