Consider methods and challenges associated with supporting upper elementary teachers’ implementation of NGSS-based classroom interventions in this structured poster session.
In this structured poster session, a set of projects will present and discuss resources, models, and tools (RMTs) designed to support upper elementary teachers to implement an array of curricular and instructional interventions reflecting diverse disciplinary concepts and practices embodied in NGSS. The session aims to provide a forum for exploring diverse approaches to improving science in 3rd-5th-grade classrooms and engage in discussion about how these ideas can advance systemic efforts to support quality science instruction and student learning.
The session will begin with an introduction to the goals, overarching challenge, and guiding questions:
- What are core challenges and affordances NGSS presents for 3rd-5th-grade teachers?
- What kinds of supports can be leveraged to address perceived challenges?
Each project will provide a brief of their work, including their curricular/instructional intervention, assessment challenges, and/or assessment strategies and instruments. Then, participants will explore project posters and engage informally with presenters, using a tuning protocol to help structure discussions and record ideas. The session will conclude with a whole-group, facilitated discussion on the various challenges and supports; themes in RMTs across projects; and critical next steps in efforts to develop RMTs to support elementary teachers implementation of NGSS.
