February 2019 Newsletter

Dear Colleagues,

In this newsletter, we feature current DRK-12 projects doing research on assessment and learning technologies, as well as share a framing piece by James Lester on recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI). Technology-enhanced assessment is a timely topic, with both game-based assessments and AI (the focus of a new White House initiative) in the news.

Time and time again, DRK-12 awardees generously share their expertise and experience with colleagues. Most recently, building on a discussion in the From Pilots to Products PI meeting session, a small group met with an awardee to discuss approaches her project might take to tackle the persistent challenge of disseminating products and sustaining work. Read about the take-aways below in our dissemination and sustainability article.

We hope to see you at one of the upcoming DRK-12 conference presentations!

Sincerely,
The CADRE Team

Dissemination and Sustainability of Project Results, Services, and Products

CADRE was contacted by an awardee seeking input from the DRK-12 research community about how to support the dissemination and sustainability of her project's products, an issue familiar to most of us. In response, CADRE organized a one-hour session, modeled after the Science Education at the Crossroads meetings organized by John Settlage and Adam Johnston. The online session built on the expertise offered during the From Pilots to Products session at the 2018 DRK-12 PI Meeting. A group of eight participants joined the online session to address this challenge and share their experiences. As one participant reflected afterwards, "This is clearly an issue we are all struggling with, at different levels and in different ways, and it was great to have the opportunity to discuss in a focused way."

We invite you to read about the ideas shared during the PI meeting and online sessions:
Visit our Dissemination Toolkit for additional resources. If you have a challenge that you would like to discuss with a group of awardees, let us know!

Spotlight on Technology-Enhanced Assessment

In 2012, 13 members of the DRK-12 and REESE assessment communities produced the New Measurement Paradigms report, which describes the range of measurement methods being used to assess STEM knowledge and skills in e-learning environments. Seven years later, the DRK-12 portfolio includes a wide range of projects leveraging technology to transform the assessment of STEM learning and teaching, including:
  • Projects applying the methods described in the 2012 report
  • Projects designing more equitable assessments for underserved populations
  • Projects empowering teachers with new formative assessment tools and practices

This spotlight offers reflections from James Lester, one of the report's original authors, on how the field has evolved; highlights 5 projects' current work; and provides additional resources for those who wish to learn more.

DRK-12 Publications, Presentations, and Websites

Thank you to the current awardees who filled out our survey on recent publications, upcoming presentations, and project websites. Congratulations on all you have accomplished in the past year! We use this information to update project pages, the event calendar, and the resource library on cadrek12.org.

Attending one of the conferences below? See which DRK-12 projects will be presenting their work:

View all submissions—new publications, upcoming presentations, and project websites—in Excel spreadsheets. Presentations by CADRE Fellows are denoted by an asterisk.

If you work on a DRK-12 project that is currently funded and have not yet filled out the survey (below), we encourage you to do so!

We also invite members of completed projects to share your research results, products, and services with the DRK-12 community. Please email this information to cadrek12.org.
