Current Work Description

Teaching, research, and service activities committed to improving the schooling prospects and achievement of bilingual children through the production and sharing of practical and innovative research. This combined work focuses on increasing the schooling success of historically marginalized culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) K-12 students and Chican@/Latin@ students in particular. Currently working on three projects focused on supporting teachers of emergent bilinguals in mathematics and science: a collaborative Department of Education project titled Mathematics And Language, Literacy Integration in Dual Language Settings (MALLI), a collaborative longitudinal NSF-funded project titled Secondary Science Teaching for English Language, Literacy Acquisition (SSTELLA), and an ethnographic study examining scientific biliteracy practices involving novice bilingual teachers and K-6 students titled Ciencia para todos means teaching science in both languages.
