Event Description

The theme of AERA’s 2011 Annual Meeting—“Inciting the Social Imagination: Education Research for the Public Good”— is intended to encourage submissions that address the conceptual, methodological, policy, and pragmatic challenges and opportunities in re-imagining the promise and potential of education research. We encourage submissions that emphasize innovative approaches to education research, particularly work that contributes to robust public policy and the public good. This focus encourages education researchers to draw on transdisciplinary theories and constructs, integrated methods, and research approaches that aim to answer a breadth of questions from causal to interpretive/descriptive.

Abstract: Research has given limited attention to subject area instruction of English Language Learners (ELLs), specifically in math and science (August & Hakuta, 1997, Lee 2005). This symposium explores how the challenge has been answered by presenting research designed to expand the knowledge base and how it further advances STEM learning for all students. The first paper discusses a portfolio of federally-funded projects focusing on ELL and math and science education. The second paper addresses ELL science assessment and how research can inform improvement. The third paper presents how culturally different approaches to knowledge can be incorporated in classrooms. The fourth paper presents findings on how elementary school children from diverse backgrounds interpret items on high-stakes tests. The fifth paper presents a longitudinal study of middle school science for English language and literacy acquisition.
