In the face of the most serious economic crisis in generations, K–12 schools across the U.S. are slashing budgets and educational technology has become an easy target for cuts. The current crisis presents not just challenges, but also tremendous opportunities to strengthen technology investments, operations, programs, plans, staff and results.
Indicating that these reduced budgets are “the new normal,” Education Secretary Arne Duncan stated, “For the next several years, preschool, K-12, and postsecondary educators are likely to face the challenge of doing more with less. My message is that this challenge can, and should be, embraced as an opportunity to make dramatic improvements. I believe enormous opportunities for improving the productivity of our education system lie ahead if we are smart, innovative, and courageous in rethinking the status quo… Technology can play a huge role in increasing educational productivity, but not just as an add-on or for a high-tech reproduction of current practice. Again, we need to change the underlying processes to leverage the capabilities of technology.” --US Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan, American Enterprise Institute, Nov, 2010.
Look forward to seeing you in New Orleans!
