NGSS Final Public Draft to be Released

NGSS Second and Final Public Draft to be Released Tuesday, January 8

Mark your calendars. The second (and final) public draft of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) will be released on Tuesday, January 8, at 3 p.m. Eastern.

As with previous drafts, Achieve and NSTA encourage teachers to review the draft and provide feedback online to Achieve during the comment period, which ends January 29. To review the draft when it is released, go to www.nextgenscience.org.

Immediately following the January 8 release, on Wednesday, January 9, at 7:30 p.m. (Eastern), NSTA will host a web seminar on key components of the second NGSS draft featuring Stephen Pruitt, Vice President for Content, Research and Development for Achieve. The 90-minute webinar will also include NSTA President Karen Ostlund. To register for the web seminar, click here.

To help your school/district prepare to review and provide comment on the second NGSS draft, a special web seminar on organizing and leading a study group will be offered on Monday, January 7. Harold Pratt, NSTA past president, and Ted Willard, director of NSTA’s efforts around NGSS, will lead this popular seminar. Register for this web seminar here. Read the NSTA Guide for Leading a Study Group on Next Generation Science Standards, Second Public Draft (PDF).

The final NGSS standards are expected to be released in late March. This will be the last public opportunity to add your voice to the science standards that are expected to change the teaching and learning of science nationwide. For more information and a brief history of the NGSS process, go to www.nsta.org/about/standardsupdate.

Also this month and next—NSTA will be hosting additional web seminars exploring the scientific and engineering practices in A Framework for K–12 Science Education. All web seminars will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Eastern Time and are free.
