About Me (Bio)
I'm so excited to be a part of this group of professionals! You may not realize how unique this Center is! The research scientists here investigate the polar and alpine regions of the world from biological, chemical, physical, and geological perspectives; making sense of this information relative to the long history of the Earth. They collaborate with partners around the world and use state-of-the-art equipment and methods, some of which were designed here, specifically for these purposes!

So I am eager to fulfill the educational component of the Center's Mission Statement... to "offer enhanced educational opportunities and provide outreach activities" that build upon the important and truly interdisciplinary work of the scientists and their research associates.

Much of this work has been done over the years by the support staff at the Center, and I'm pleased to help them coordinate these efforts and design a program that will meet the needs of the public in new ways.

Beyond Penguins and Polar Bears, an online professional development magazine for elementary teachers, focuses on preparing teachers to teach science concepts in an already congested curriculum by integrating inquiry-based science with literacy teaching. Launched in March 2008, each thematic issue relates elementary science topics and concepts to the real-world context of the polar regions and includes standards-based science and content-rich literacy learning.
