BSCS to co-host Sandra K. Abell Institute for Doctoral Students

BSCS and the science education faculty from Pennsylvania State University are teaming up to co-host the biannual 2011 Sandra K. Abell Institute for Doctoral Students sponsored by NARST, a worldwide organization of professionals committed to the improvement of science teaching and learning through research. The institute will be held at BSCS in Colorado Springs, 23-28 July.

The focus of this year's institute is on designing and conducting classroom-based research. The planning committee chose this focus because high-quality studies of student learning, teacher learning, curriculum, equity, and policy have strong links to what is happening in the classroom.

The institute will bring together 43 doctoral students and 12 faculty mentors, with participants representing seven countries and 33 institutions. During the institute mentors will challenge and broaden students' work in their doctoral studies by critiquing and strengthening their conceptual frameworks to guide their research studies as well as their qualitative and quantitative methods.

Sandra K. Abell, in whose memory the institute is named, was instrumental in conceptualizing, planning, and hosting the first Summer Research Institute.
