K-12 Computing Teachers Workshop

“Extending Our Reach: New Tools for Engaging all Students”
Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing
November 11 -12, 2011
Oregon Convention Center
Portland, Oregon

Hosted in Partnership with the Computer Science Teachers Association (CSTA) and the Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology (ABI)

The K-12 workshop is hosted in Partnership with the Computer Science Teachers Association (CSTA) and the Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology (ABI) and will be the third K-12 teachers workshop held at the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing Conference. This year’s workshop will build upon the equity issue discussions from the inaugural workshop which culminated in a white paper “Addressing Core Equity Issues in K-12 Computer Science Education: Identifying Barriers and Sharing Strategies.”

The 2011 workshop will convene K-12 teachers who work with under-represented populations of students at the Grace Hopper Celebration to:

  1. Instigate a discussion of equity and computer science curriculum;
  2. Create knowledge sharing opportunities on concrete solutions grounded in teachers’ articulated, specific needs;
  3. Disseminate these solutions to a broad audience of teachers, STEM practitioners, and interested stakeholders via workshop, Town Hall meeting and discussion of a newly released white paper; and
  4. Evaluate the effectiveness of these solutions in classrooms that serve under-represented student populations.
