How should science curriculum developers respond to the changing technological landscape in school and out?

This presentation will continue the discussions begun at the Blue Sky Workshop on the Future of Instructional Design and at the EDC meeting on Deeply Digital Curriculum. The presenters will provide short presentations that encapsulate the discussions to date on how current technological and policy trends are shaping the way curriculum is created, structured and used in the classroom. A particular focus will be on K–12 science, looking at the near-term impact of new technologies, such as e-books and Web-based social media tools, and the continued push for more engaging and relevant instruction. Presenters will explore (1) longer-term trends based on emerging techniques in data-mining and intelligent tutor systems, (2) ideas on how curriculum and instructional resource developers might position themselves to take advantage of current and emerging technologies, and (3) the potential for these emerging tools as vehicles for innovative teaching and learning tools. 

The format will be an interactive presentation. The presenters will provide short presentations (15 minutes each) based on possible evolutionary design solutions for current curriculum materials that take advantage of near and farther term trends. The presenters will work through an example from an existing curriculum to show how it might be improved through the construction of new technologies for students and teachers. In doing so, they will demonstrate how alternative designs could serve different stakeholders' needs at different times/contexts. The rest of the time will comprise structured activities with the participants, eliciting feedback on the presentations and generating new possibilities.
